Tea parties were held all across our country yesterday, in a show of defiance against the Obama administration's policies and actions. Three rallies were held in the Kansas City metro area alone, the biggest of which was held at the Liberty Memorial, which, coupled with Union Station, made for an awesome backdrop, as you can see from these pictures. The main speaker was my favorite KC talk radio host, Chris Stigall. I would have loved to attend, but instead I had to head straight from work to a meeting last night.
The rallies made the main stream media squirm. This morning's NY Times front page had no mention of the estimated 250,000 Americans that participated, though I will give credit to the KC Star for showcasing the Tea Party story on the front of today's paper. TV reporters' true colors shined through as the MSNBC hosts had a hayday making sexual references to "teabagging". CNN's Susan Roesgen, in particular, had extreme difficulty in disguising her disgust: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QOrPzVECSjo. Apparently this man that believes Americans have the right to liberty is not worthy of a respectful interview. You stay classy, CNN!
I hope that we see continued grassroots efforts in the future, because it gives those of us that do not believe in the policies our politicians are enacting something to get excited about, especially in absence of any excitement from the Republican Party. And make no mistake about it, these are, in fact, grassroots efforts, contrary to Speaker Pelosi, who claimed, "This initiative is funded by the high end; we call it AstroTurf, it's not really a grass-roots movement. It's AstroTurf by some of the wealthiest people in America to keep the focus on tax cuts for the rich instead of for the great middle class." Actually, Nancy, it is possible to get things done without politicians or lobbyists. These were hard-working, tax-paying citizens that took vacation time to voice their opinion. I suppose "right-wing extemists" would also be an adequate description.
